    We begin with two weeks on Thoreau's internationally important essay "Civil Disobedience" and then go on to discuss significant passages from Thoreau's major work, Walden. The course is a chance to examine and discuss the ways we choose to live our lives, and the ways society asks us to live - and the ways these two come into conflict (or not).

  • "TAKE A LINE FOR A WALK" Creating Paul Klee inspired Artwork: Part 1

    COURSE OBJECTIVES: To develop insight into your personal creativity by being open and unjudgmental to different ways of working and contextualising your work. Experiment with the notion of taking a line for a walk through various techniques and mediums. COURSE OUTCOMES: Gain knowledge, understanding and hands on experience of colour theory, fluid drawing and all aspects of the creative process. Feel confident in expressing yourself creatively and intuitively though a multitude of mediums.

  • C2345647 The Mutating Virus of Antisemitism from Ancient Template to Holocaust Denial

    The course will explore the origins, development and implementation of antisemitism from the birth of Christianity to the Final Solution. The negative depiction of the Jews built into European culture and the transmission and dissemination of hateful stereotypes of " the Jew" across the centuries will be examined using examples drawn from the frequent explosion of anti-Jewish violence.to help understand why Jews in Europe were persecuted. Finally, the catalysts of 19th Century antisemitism that Hitler was able to exploit will be studied leading to the emergence of Nazi ideology, the creation of the racial state and genocide against the Jews.

    Like learning flamenco dancing, and like any learning experience, learning the Spanish language requires lots and lots of practice and repetition, repetition, repetition. This course is for people who have learnt Spanish previously, have a good understanding of basic Spanish grammar, including the use of the present tense and some past tenses.     A series of 6 lectures/workshops for film buffs exploring the ways in which a film score impacts on the success or otherwise of films, using classic and modern examples.

 Learners will gain insight and understanding through the analysis of various scenes from films of differing genres, generating their own ideas of what makes a soundtrack elevate the visual aspects of a film.

 The sessions will be interactive and contain some practical breakout sessions.

  • C2423004 The Diversity of English Through Seven Lenses

    This course examines different stories behind the creation of English words through seven lenses: the Anglo-Saxons; the Vikings; Biblical English; English bards; Naval slang; Pronunciation, accent and dialect; and Global English. The English language is growing apace: every year English speakers are adding at least 1,000 new words to the million or so words we already have. The use of these lenses aims to help us increase our vocabulary and understanding. Is the English language a rare bloom that has become a lingua franca; or an invasive weed encroaching on other languages? This is an online course which uses Zoom video conferencing software. You can access resources and connect to the Zoom sessions via Canvas, the WEA’s virtual learning environment.

In her words and her art she vividly conveyed the life of the remarkable fisherfolk. We will explore the hardships endured by the people of the North Eastern coast's fishing communities and how their way of life inspired the art and writing of this great artist.

    In this course we will be looking at the later careers of Carl Larsson and Anders Zorn, and the life and career of Bruno Liljefors, along with other artists determined to transform their society with their visions of Sweden. The Opponents can be likened to Swedish Impressionists, evolving new ways of depicting their world whilst concerned that their art should also contribute to a more enlightened society. Certain artists lives and work will be looked at in depth, especially Bruno Liljefors, considered by many to be the world's first Environmental Artist, and the mature careers of Carl Larsson and Anders Zorn, amongst other significant artists. This course will present these artists in the context of their time, at the leading edge of Scandinavian art & society.

    Later Pre-Raphaelitism's engagement with contemporary concerns functioned largely by projecting the protagonists depicted into a romanticised world and by this means later Victorian preoccupations could be outplayed imaginatively. The later Pre-Raphaelites provided late Victorian society with the means to explore imaginatively, the relationship between the sexes in a way that liberated them from the constraints of their time. The content of this course will comprise - William Morris and Burne-Jones' 'Dream of an Earthly Paradise' Female Pre-Raphaelite painters Ladies of Shallot La Belle Dames Sans Merci Themes such as 'The Knight and the Lady'
